Τα 75 χρόνια της UNESCO εορτάστηκαν με μια λαμπρή τελετή, παρουσία Αρχηγών Κρατών και Κορυφαίων Προσωπικοτήτων από ολόκληρο τον κόσμο, την Παρασκευή 12 Νοεμβρίου 2021, στην έδρα του Οργανισμού στο Παρίσι.

Στο πλαίσιο της τελετής ο Έλληνας Πρωθυπουργός κοιτάζοντας προς το Νέο Τώρα και μέσα από μια φρέσκια και εύγλωττη έκκληση έθεσε το θέμα της επιστροφής των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα στη γενέτειρά τους, την Ελλάδα, ζητώντας επισήμως από τη Βρετανία να ξεκινήσει ένα bona fide διάλογο με την Ελλάδα:

” (…) δε μπορεί να υπάρξει διάλογος μεταξύ των εθνών, αν δεν υπάρχει διάλογος μεταξύ των πολιτισμών, κάτι που προϋποθέτει σεβασμό για την ιστορία, την κληρονομιά και την ταυτότητα του κάθε έθνους. Κατά τη γνώμη μου τα εμβληματικά μνημεία, που είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένα με την ταυτότητα ενός έθνους, θα πρέπει να αποτελούν υπόθεση του έθνους αυτού.

Ας εξετάσουμε το ζήτημα των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα, τα οποία αποτελούν ένα εξαιρετικά σημαντικό κομμάτι της παγκόσμιας πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αποτελούν ίσως τη σημαντικότερη συμβολική σύνδεση ανάμεσα στους σύγχρονους Έλληνες και τους προγόνους τους.

Κατά το μεγαλύτερό της μέρος, η συλλογή αυτή, εκτίθεται στο Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, λίγες εκατοντάδες μέτρα από τον Παρθενώνα. Το ότι μπορεί κανείς να δει στο σημείο αυτό, στη γενέτειρά τους, τα Γλυπτά του Παρθενώνα, οπτικά συνδεδεμένα με το μνημείο που τους προσδίδει την οικουμενική τους ακτινοβολία, είναι κάτι που έχει πολύ μεγάλη σημασία.

Ωστόσο, όσο ένα μέρος της συλλογής παραμένει «εξόριστο» στο Λονδίνο, αυτή η διάσταση δεν θα μπορεί να εκτιμηθεί πλήρως. Για το λόγο αυτό, πιστεύω ότι είναι απαραίτητο τα Γλυπτά του Παρθενώνα που βρίσκονται στο Λονδίνο να επανενωθούν με το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της συλλογής των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα που βρίσκεται στην Αθήνα.(…)

(…)Το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο θα πρέπει να προχωρήσει σε έναν καλόπιστο διάλογο με την Ελλάδα. Και τους ζητώ να το κάνουν. Άλλωστε, φέτος συμπληρώνονται 200 χρόνια από την έναρξη του Αγώνα για την Ανεξαρτησία της Ελλάδας. Δεν θα μπορούσε να υπάρξει καλύτερη στιγμή από αυτή για την επιστροφή του τμήματος που λείπει και την επανένωση Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα, στoν τόπο που γεννήθηκαν, την Ελλάδα”.

Σύμφωνα με την ελληνική κυβέρνηση, κατά τη διάρκεια των αυριανών συνομιλιών στο Λονδίνο, ο πρωθυπουργός Κυριάκος Μητσοτάκης θα ζητήσει από το Boris Johnson να επιστρέψει τα Γλυπτά του Παρθενώνα.

Λοιπόν, μένει να δούμε.

Σε έναν πολύπλοκο και πολυ-πολικό κόσμο, μια νέα εποχή έρχεται, όπου τα πολιτιστικά ζητήματα αναδύονται με αυξανόμενη ταχύτητα. Τα καλά νέα είναι ότι μετά από μια μακρά “Πολιτιστική Αφασία”, ο Έλληνας Πρωθυπουργός παίρνει το βήμα και φέρνει το φως της αλλαγής από την “Πόλη του Φωτός”.

Looking towards the New Now

UNESCO’s 75th anniversary was celebrated with a shining ceremony, in the presence of Heads of State and Leading Personalities from around the world, on Friday 12th November 2021, at the Organization’s headquarters in Paris.

During the ceremony, the Greek Prime Minister, looking towards the New Now and through a fresh and eloquent plea, raised the issue of the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to their birthplace, Greece and formally asked Great Britain to enter into a bona fide dialogue with Greece:

” (..)There cannot be dialogue between nations, without dialogue amongst cultures. Something which presupposes respect for the history, heritage, and identity of each nation. To my mind that means that emblematic monuments, inherently connected to the very identity of a nation, should be a matter of that nation.

Take the Parthenon Sculptures, which make up a hugely significant piece of the world’s cultural heritage and are perhaps the most important symbolic link between modern Greeks and their ancestors.

Most of that collection can be found on display in the Acropolis museum, a few hundred meters from the Parthenon. That they can be seen in situ, in their birthplace, connected visually to the monument which lends the sculptures their global significance, that really matters.

However, while a part of that collection remains exiled in London that impact can never be fully appreciated. That is why I believe it is essential that the Parthenon marbles in London should be reunited with the majority of the Parthenon Sculptures in Athens.
Last September a pivotal step was taken by UNESCOs Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property.

For the first time, it unanimously adopted a decision recognising that “the case has an intergovernmental character and, therefore, the obligation to return the Parthenon Sculptures lies squarely on the UK Government”.

The UK should move to a bona fide dialogue with Greece. And I urge them to do so. After all, this year marks the 200th anniversary of Greece’s War of Independence. There could be no better time than now, in which to reunite the missing section of the Parthenon Sculptures – in their birthplace – in Greece. “

Following UNESCO’s speech according to the Greek government, the PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis will ask Boris Johnson to return the Parthenon Sculptures during talks in London tomorrow.

Well, let’s see.

In a complex and multipolar world, a new era is coming, where cultural issues are emerging with increasing speed. The good news is that after a long “Cultural Aphasia”, the Greek Prime Minister takes the stand and brings a light of change from the “City of Light”.
